Does/Did your infant have a milk allergy? How and when did it start?

Maria asked:

My baby is 9 weeks old. This week, she had diarrhea with blood in it, vomiting, and what looked like eczema. The doctor thinks it was just a GI infection. She is on Nutramigen right now and will switch back to her regular formula in a day or two to test if it was the infection or if it was a milk allergy. I’m just curious if this would be a typical onset of a milk allergy or not.

Could be. Should have breast fed.

I had a milk allergy as a baby. My parents found out because my mom was breastfeeding and I was throwing up when she would consume alot of milk. Her doctor told her to drink more milk which obviously increased it and the pediatrician told her to stop the milk. She decided to just stop breastfeeding and gave me soy formula. I am breastfeeding my 10 month old but I have never drank any milk in my life because of that allergy so my daughter has been fine so far.

It can be. I am allergic to milk and the way that I acted from the get go was refusing my bottle (milk based formula). It was a battle (screaming, colic, intestinal probs) for my mom every day.

When I finally was off the bottle, I would refuse milk (she’d flavor it and hope I’d drink some) and to this day, I can’t stand it and it makes me sick.

That was in the dark ages . . . no choices and all that.

Fast forward to 5 years ago . . . my younger daughter was nursed and whenever I was away (hardly never) and the breast milk ran out, a well meaning sitter would give her formula . . . immediate and serious vomitting, screaming, as well as water diarhea a few hours later. SHe always had a rash.

No milk = no rash, vomitting, etc.

She is five now, and she drinks milk (2% mixed with yogurt) and does better, but won’t drink just straight milk. She is not allergic, but does have a lactose intolerance problem (she’s been tested for allergies).

My personal advice is really talk to the ped, the rash doesn’t fit the GI Diagnosis to me.

    Good luck!
